Instead of sharing the “who, what, where, and when” of biographical details, this is an attempt to share “why and how” I see the world the way that I do.

I have a deep affinity for the first place that I knew. It was a small town in southern Arkansas where vestiges of the another time were still apparent in the older generations of the culture. When I think about people like my grandfather, I recognize that I am living in a different world than the one that he knew. Change has both positive and negative potential and I see what is lost when we change how we relate to the local community. But there is also a positive transformation that has come about in me through my global experience. The constant tension that results from living globally is that as much as I love where I came from I can never go home.

My grandfather lived all of his life in Arkansas and most of it in a small town. My life is marked by global living starting with my marriage to my wife who was born and raised in France. But also because I lived in Greece and worked with refugees for several years some of my closest friends are from the Middle East. Three of my closest friends are: African American, French with North African origins, and Iraqi. from radically different places: an African American from Memphis, radically different my wife, the three friends that I talk to the most are: French, three closest three people that French-American dual citizen. and I have learned to share her love of the place and the people that she knew growing up.
