My Story with Languages

I cannot imagine my life as a monolingual even though that is how I lived until my mid-twenties. Like most people I studied a language that I did not learn in high school. I only discovered a love for languages in graduate school when I studied ancient Greek and ancient Hebrew. Neither one of these languages is spoken but both had practical application when I moved to Greece and encountered both Modern Greek and Arabic for the first time. I became particularly fascinated with Arabic and studied both Modern Standard Arabic and the Levantine dialect in Amman, Jordan. I started learning French in 2020 when I got married to a native-speaker and now that I am living in France and speaking French everyday it has become my second language with Arabic as a third language. In the meantime, I also studied two Kurdish dialects (Kurmanji and Sorani) both online and in a language school in Iraq. I am always dabbling in a couple languages for fun and those have been Spanish and Russian for the last few years. Most recently, I have begun studying Persian and the Algerian dialect of Arabic.
