Love Languages

People sometimes ask me how I have studied so many languages and the only answer is that I love language. There is no get-fluent fast system that actually works, no one-size-fits-all approach for any language but I do believe that anyone with a genuine interest can learn any language.

I did not speak another language until I was in my mid-twenties. Almost ten years later, I speak around ten languages with varying degrees of fluency.

English and French are the only languages in which I can communicate fluently in virtually any context. I am less fluent in Arabic but I have studied the Jordanian dialect, the Algerian dialect and Modern Standard Arabic so I am able to get by in most circumstances. I lived in Greece for several years so I can understand and speak modern Greek well-enough to accomplish all practical purposes. I studied two dialects of Kurdish as part of my graduate studies, Kurmanji through online university courses and Sorani at a language school in Iraq. I have spent a few months learning Farsi off and on but because of my knowledge Arabic and Kurdish, I am able to understand the basic meaning of sentences. I can’t speak Farsi yet but it is currently one of my highest priority languages. After learning French, I am able to read Spanish but overall it is a low priority for me. I have started learning Russian but it is one of the most difficult languages I have studied and so progress is very slow. Finally, the first two languages I ever studied were Koine Greek (300 BC-600 AD) and Classical Hebrew (900-600 BC) which are languages that are only good for reading because all the native speakers are dead.

Academy Offerings

  • Whether your goal is to learn one of the languages I have studied or not, a coaching relationship helps you to set goals and have accountability. Additionally, my language learning experience will be useful to help you avoid common pitfalls and to progress consistently.

  • The title of this course, French Autrement Dit means “French, in other words…” This is a course intended for English speakers who often struggle with French

  • This course is designed to help people get started learning Arabic. Some of the early challenges that I will help you overcome are learning the alphabet and choosing a dialect. Part of my unique approach is learning the words and phrases that are common across most Arabic dialects.
